Tips on how to drive in winter weather conditions

Driving in the winter can be both frightening and dangerous and even more so if your car is not equipped with proper tires. The tires do play a large role in helping you stay safe in while driving in winter conditions especially with the new innovative technologies used by tire manufacturers these days. If you live in an area with severe winters, then dedicated winter tires is the way to go for ultimate safety. Once proper winter tires like the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 tires are mounted you are one step closer to handling the upcoming winter months.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 tires offer the perfect balance of safety and comfort and the most state of the art grip to assure the most traction on snow and ice.

These tires make use of these newer technologies like special crystals added to the rubber compound that allows the tire to grip the driving surface and keep you in control of your car at all times. This is a non-studded tire that is up for the most treacherous of winters however having said that nothing beats the grip (especially on ice) like studded winter tires.

No matter what tires you end up choosing for your car it is important to stay prudent when driving in severe winter weather. Every year there are more than half a million crashes in the winter months due to dangerous road conditions. So, there are somethings to consider before heading out. When driving in cold weather it is important to make sure you always have some extra gear in the trunk, things like, extra food, water, warm clothing, a blanket, a flashlight and snow scraper etc.

You should also make sure the tires are properly inflated, that your gas tank is at least half full and don’t use the cruise control while on any slippery surface like ice and snow.

When driving on snow you should drive slowly and keep enough distance between the car in front of you and even if you have anti-lock brakes you should never slam on the brakes but put slow firm pressure on the brake pedal. Try not to apply to much gas on snow covered roads as it can make your wheels spin and reduce your speed when going down hills. These are some good tips to keep in mind while driving on winter roads however the most important thing to consider for safe winter driving remains proper tires.

When to choose all-weather tires for an SUV

The benefit with all-weather tires compared to dedicated winter tires is of course the option to keep one set of tires year round. Since the Fosters live in an area with occasional snow in the winter, they wanted to equip their SUV with special SUV all-weather tires since they had read that all-season tires are not really able to handle snow and ice as well. This is why they do not carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol like all-weather tires and winter tires. This emblem basically tells you that the tires are able to handle sever winter conditions. This was important to the Fosters, as even though where they live they don’t experience severe winters, it does have snow, ice and possible rain and temperatures below 7 degrees Fahrenheit which makes this tire ideal. The fact of owning an SUV does not equal not needing good quality tires for the winter months because even though the 4-wheel drive optimizes the power transmission delivery it gives only minimal assistance in transverse handling and braking situations. The SUV being a much heavier vehicle actually needs more grip to be able to brake. We decided for the Nokian WR G4 SUV tire. This tire offers both excellent winter grip and driving responsiveness allowing enhanced performance.

Nokian WR G4 SUV tires are designed for all weather durability and excellent handling on snow as well as dry surfaces. It has low rolling resistance thereby making it fuel efficient. It also handles well in wet conditions allowing extra protection from hydroplaning from either rain or slush (aquaplaning and slushplaning). This protection from hydroplaning is due to the deep transverse grooves that combined with the strong, arrow-like directional tread and polished main grooves efficiently remove water and slush. Slush is always of concern when the snow starts melting and you get the streets covered with slush. Where we live it is sometimes not cold enough to snow so instead, we have rain thereby melting the snow creating slush.

The Nokian WR G4 SUV all weather tires can be used all year long where the Fosters live, which of course is convenient as they are not required to change tires and deal with storing them in the garage.

When can you get all-weather tires instead of winter tires?

It is not always necessary to get dedicated winter tires if you live in an area that has mild winters all-weather tires might suffice. In places like Eugene, Oregon, winters consist mostly of rain and if it snows it only stays on the ground for a few days. Many drivers get all-weather tires so not to have to deal with the hassle of changing tires.

Smart drivers decide to get the Nokian WR G4 all-weather tires.

The Nokian WR G4 all-weather tires offer excellent functionality in varying weather conditions, remaining stable and easy to control even at high speeds while remaining fuel efficient and environmentally friendly due to its low rolling resistance. These tires are also made of environmentally friendly products like canola oil as well as other premium products. No toxic or carcinogenic chemicals are used in the production of these tires. The tires are able to handle any weather conditions all year around even snow and ice.

Even though this is not a dedicated winter tire it still carries the Mountain Snowflake symbol, which means that these tires are rated for use even in severe winter conditions. So even though there is not a lot of snow here in Eugene, Oregon, theywon’t be caught off guard when it does snow. Nokian Tyres all-weather products have excellent grip and handling regardless of the forecast. This is partially due to polished grooves which effectively clean snow, slush and water off the tires. This is especially important in deep snow or slush. These polished grooves also help provide protection against hydroplaning especially from slushplaning which can be of concern when the snow melts. In Oregon, drivers have to worry both about hydroplaning from rain as well as from snow. This is because besides getting a lot of rain fall in the year, Oregon does have the occasional snowfall which usually doesn’t stay on the ground for more than a few days. This means drivers have to deal with slush from when the snow melts.

These tires also have self-locking 3D sipes on the center ribs which reduces heat resistance making the tire extremely durable and a great performer both on snowy roads and bare asphalt. These tires are good enough for use all year around and allows drivers to keep one set of tires with no need for changeover.

When Should You Get All-Season Tires?

Are you looking to buy all season tires to be able to keep one tire all year around?. Let’s face it who wants to store a second set of tires in the garage. The advantage of a tire that can be used all year around is obvious but is it safe? This depends somewhat on what kind of driving you will be doing and where you live. This is because an all-season tire is not made for winter conditions. So contrary to the name all season these tires are only good in 3 seasons, those being spring, summer and fall.

Unlike an all-weather tire the all-season tires are not able to handle snow and ice and therefor are not marked with the emblem or mountain snowflake symbol designated for use in severe winter conditions. This is different than an all-weather tire that does actually possess this emblem. This is because the all-weather tire can be considered like a hybrid between an all season tire and a winter tire. The all season tires are only safe in the spring, fall and summer season if you live in an area with winter weather. However if you live in an area like Los Angeles that does not have winters the all season tires are good all year around.

Additionally, an all-season tire like the Nokian eNtyre 2.0 has unique tread pattern that provides excellent wet grip and smooth and quiet ride while remaining an environmentally friendly tire. It also has the silent sidewall technology to insure an noise and vibration free ride. The polished lateral and inside grooves also allows the water to evacuate thereby protecting from hydroplaning. Hydroplaning can also occur when the snow melts and there is slush on the road.

All-season tires can be used all year round in areas without winter weather or at least not with severe winters. Even though they cannot provide the best-performance in all season compared to dedicated winter and summer tires, they will eliminate the need for a changing of tires in winter and summer. The Nokian eNtyre 2.0 with its innovative design assures ultimate safety and excellent handling both on wet and dry surfaces. This is because of the many new innovations like polished grooves and the silent sidewall technology which minimizes noise and vibration. Living in Los Angeles the Nokian eNtyre 2.0 is an excellent all year around tire that does not compromise on performance while remaining a environmentally friendly tire.

All weather tires actually hold the emblem or mountain snowflake symbol designated for use in severe winter conditions this is different than an all season tire that is only safe in the spring, fall and summer season. The all-weather tread made from an intermediate rubber compound that offers excellent grip on both summer roads and winter roads. During the cold season when the roads are icy, snowy and wet they work better than summer tires.

Additionally, an all-weather tire like the Nokian WR G3 has unique tread pattern with grooves that effectively clean snow, slush and water out of the tire to ensure excellent grip and reliable handling under all conditions thereby protecting from hydroplaning. Hydroplaning can also occur when the snow melts and there is slush on the road. These tires will ensure hydroplaning resistance both in heavy rain or melting ice and snow. The Nokian WR G3 will still be able to maintain proper contact with the road and provide the stability you need to handle your vehicle safety and comfort.

All-weather tires are the only tires that can be used all year round. Even though they cannot provide the best-performance in all season compared to dedicated winter and summer tires, they will outperform all-season tires both in winter and summer. The Nokian WR G3 with its innovative design assures absolute grip and excellent handling even in the most toughest of winters. This is because of the many new innovations like polished grooves and the 3D self-locking siping which minimizes heat generation  thereby improving the wear resistance of the tire.

It is good to know that there is an all-weather tire like the Nokian WR G3 that allows you to equip your car with one tire throughout all seasons of the year without compromising on safety.

When Should You Get A Dedicated Summer Tire?

When should you get a dedicated summer tire? This depends on what kind of driving you do and where you live. If you live in an area which experiences very hot summers with occasional summer rain showers it would be well advised to invest in dedicated summer tire. This is because the summer tires are formulated with a softer rubber compound and larger tread blocks to maximize contact with the road in warmer weather. This is why summer tires have better grip in both wet and dry conditions. Summer tires are able to handle wet roads better than winter tires and can be used from spring until fall. As always, it’s important to have a tread depth of at least four millimeters to prevent hydroplaning. Hydroplaning is the reasons for most of the accidents in the summer season so to stay safe make sure you equip your vehicle with good quality summer tires and always check that the tread depth is adequate.

If you live in an area where the summers are really hot like here in Florida, the summer tires allow the best handling on both wet and dry roads. You will have optimal performance so if you have a high performance car you will get the most enjoyment and handling when using dedicated summer tires. Of course, you could get away with using all-season tires however since they are kind of a jack-of-all-trades you won’t get nearly the same driving performance.

Summer tires like the Nokian zLine offer responsive steering and maintain perfect feel of the road under all summer conditions. This is because of many innovations like the multilayer rubber compound, which ensures that the feel of the road remains predictable under all circumstances. It also has low rolling resistance, which translates to lower fuel consumption. This is just some of the advanced features that a dedicated summer tire provides. It also is much more silent then other tires taking advantage of the silent groove design, which prevents noise.

With summer lasting from early spring to late fall here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida the investment into a summer tire more than pays off. I also quite enjoy driving and spend lots of time on the road so for me it is important to get the most enjoyment out of the driving with high quality well performing tires.

Do You Need Studded Winter Tires On A Hybrid Or Electrical Car?

To increase safety, it’s very important to invest in good snow tires this is true even for a hybrid or electrical car. The question is if you need studded winter tires? Actually, both hybrids and electrical cars are actually heavier than conventional cars due to their battery packs so the extra grip and traction that a studded tire gives might be a good investment. There are many tires on the market, and it is important to understand why studded winter tires give the ultimate grip and traction. Let’s face it nothing can outperform a studded tire on ice and snow and especially on black ice. It is the studded tire that allows you to grip the road to optimize both braking and accelerating. I installed the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 Studded tires on my VW e-Golf as this tire came recommended especially for electric cars.

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 tires with its unique, patented double stud grip will provide the optimal grip in both curves and straight stretches. I opted for studded tires as with the harsh Alaskan winters I wanted to feel control of my cars at all times. Especially since this is my first winter driving in real winter conditions. Having moved from Los Angeles it’s been quite a change especially with the driving conditions here in Alaska in the winter. With the studded tires however, it doesn’t seem so different then driving on a regular dry road. Basically, the studded tires like the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 uses high quality studs that give exceptional grip and traction especially lateral traction, which helps you, remain in control of your car even on black ice.

One common complaint with studded tires is the noise and the increased rolling resistance. This is something that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 tires with its new technologies have resolved and thereby has emerged with a tire that has the lowest noise and fuel consumption of any studded tire in its product family. With its new technologies like the Nokian “eco stud 9 concept” that dampens road contact by reducing stud impact due to the airspace in the middle of the lower flange.

I decided to buy studded tires rather than non-studded tires due to the winter conditions here in Alaska and in addition not being experienced with driving on snow and ice. Whether you decide upon studded or non-studded winter tires rest assured it’s the best decision for you and your family’s safety.

What To Consider When Buying Summer Tires For A SUV

Our family just purchased a beautiful ranch property in Flagstaff, Arizona. Having accepted a job with a local tour company which gives tours of the Grand Canyon,” Bearizona” Wildlife park, and Antelope Slot Canyon to just mention a few excursions. Arranging day tours and using our family SUV to travel back and forth in sometimes quite rugged terrain I wanted to equip our SUV with some good qualitySUV summer tires. Even though we have a 4-wheel drive vehicle you would imagen that tires aren’t so important as you have access to 4-wheel drive however the composition of the tires is actually what determines your grip on the road. In addition, summer tires are the only tire that guarantees the highest grip level during the hot summer season. They are also better to deal with aquaplaning due to gentle summer showers. We decided upon the Nokian Zline SUV tires.

The Nokian zLine SUV tires have aggressive blade grooves that help prevent aquaplaning and in addition there is the shoulder of the tires that have trumpet grooves (bullet type indentations) to further prevent aquaplaning by accelerating the flow of water out of the tire via the transverse grooves thereby maximizing grip. This along with the Aramid Sidewall technology in these tires which allow puncture resistance with help of the strong aramid fibers incorporated in the sidewall. All of this insures a safe ride and there is even a driving safety indicator (DSI) patented by Nokian Tyres that allows the driver to inspect the tires to see when the tread depth is less than 4 millimeters, which could indicate a risk for aquaplaning.

The Nokian zLine SUV summer tires can be used from spring to fall but should not be used in winter. They are made up of a coral Silica tread compound that is especially made to endure the summer heat and remains extremely rigid to maintain reliable and balanced contact with the road even at high speeds and in sharp corners. Summer tires in general have a shallower tread which lets you “feel” the road and allows for a quiet and comfortable drive. I believe this tire will be well suited for my needs everything from the rugged terrain and the freeway driving that I will be doing.

We will probably invest in dedicated winter tires once winter rolls around as we do experience snow and ice here in Flagstaff.

New Truck Tires For Demanding Long Haul

The inventor of winter tires has now come out with a new series of truck tires to add to their existing portfolio of commercial tires. They already have tires in the bus and truck segment, but with the latest addition they further strengthen their portfolio in this area. The new addition is a new range called Nokian R-Truck tires.

Nokian Tyres is a Nordic producer of tires that has already been around for an impressive 120 years. Producing tires for the Nordic climate has given them an edge in tires for extreme conditions that can be utilized in numerous fields. It is almost 720 miles from North to South with a lot of the mining and forestry located in the North and the majority of the population in the south, so transporting heavy goods in harsh climates has been a high priority for ages.

The latest Nokian R-Truck range offers a range of heavy truck tires for on and off-road use for earthmoving and forestry use. Tires tend to be optimized for one condition, as it is very difficult to get a good tire that can handle the complexity you have when you combine two different working conditions from very challenging and complex off-road to the durability of long haul on smooth highways across the country. The Nokian R-Truck tire has managed to do just that.

It is an extremely durable tire for the off-road conditions in earthmoving and forestry with a special rubber compound that is very cut and crack resistant to ensure that you get maximum output from your tires, with minimum downtime. With wide self cleaning grooves that feature stone ejectors are great on the soft and muddy surfaces and even on snow and slush, while exhibiting great grip. Everything you want from your earthmoving tires or your forestry tires.

When you then hit the highway with these tires, you have a tire with low rolling resistance to ensure good fuel economy for the long haul drive. Low heat build up ensures low wear makes this tire a tire to last. The tire is available for all axle positions, steer, drive and trailer. Make sure to use the Nokian R-Truck tire on all axles to ensure good grip and durability all throughout. This is a tire that is built to last and to get the job done in a durable and safe manner.

It Is Not Safe To Use Winter Tires In The Summer

I just finished up my winter season at the ski resort in Tahoe where I had put my Nokian Nordman 7 studded tires in to good use. After accepting a job at San Francisco fisherman’s wharf, I realized that I needed to find some new tires for my car. As great as my studded winter tires were up here in Tahoe for the winter season, they obviously won’t be suitable for San Francisco.

It was unavoidable to buy winter tires here in Tahoe as the winter conditions required good quality winter tires. However, now that I am heading to San Francisco, I am looking into all season tires. All-season and summer tires are suitable for spring, summer, and fall but not for winter. Luckily my colleague Joe bought my studded winter tires from me and I bought some Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 all-season tires.

The great thing about the Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 tire is that it’s a safe and economical tire that provides a comfortable driving experience. It also has a silent sidewall Technology that cuts out noise and vibration and makes my journeys even more enjoyable.

When I bought my winter tires, I was aware I would only be using them during the winter season and for that season they were excellent. The grip was excellent, and I had no problems driving up my sloped drive way. Using these tires in any other than winter conditions, however, is not recommended and I’m sure in some states it’s not even legal. I don’t regret having invested in a good set of winter tires as I know that the all-season tires I put on now, would not have been able to handle the harsh winter conditions in Tahoe.

If I end up staying in San Francisco I will be able to continue to use my new Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 tires until the end of their life as the weather in San Francisco is well suited for all-season tires.
